Exercise: Nine Simple Words Mantra.

·        Tools Needed: A set of rune beads or mala beads.

This exercise is similar to the rune learning mantra exercise in Modern American Shamanism’s, “A Beginners Guide to the Germanic Runes.” This exercise serves a few purposes, one to help learn the Nine Noble Virtues that we use in The Way of Fire and Ice Shamanism, two as a mantra to calm and focus the mind, and three as a means to understand how these virtues can be used to combat the Jotun’s influence on humans.

To start, simply read the list of virtues off the pages in this chapter as you move the beads through your finger, one bead, one virtue. Don’t be in a hurry to memorize them, just take your time and read them. The goal is to not just learn them but internalize them. Over time you will simply know the virtues and can more effectively use them as a mantra.

Nature Exercise: Nine Simple Words Mantra in Nature.

This is the exercise I personally use the most. It can be done with a set of rune beads/mala beads or none at all.

·        Sitting – when I am sitting calmly in the woods, I will use the rune beads and simply perform the exercise as stated above but among the trees.

·        Walking – In place of a set of beads one can use one’s feet in this version. It sets the foundation for moving meditation practice that will be covered later in another book.

o   While walking out in nature I have a set distance I will walk, and each set is a virtue I say in my mind. Keep it simple, walk slowly, allow your mind to relax, and look around and see what nature has to offer while on your walk.
