It does not matter if you are a Pagan or a Heathen, sacrifice is the basis for most rituals. It is what someone gives to the gods in hope of receiving energy/megin from the gods to either bless a person, coven/kindred or empower a person/group to accomplish something.

The important point of a sacrifice is the energy that is exchanged. Energy or megin is the power we have to offer the gods, not an item. This is one of the things that confuse people about a sacrifice. I sometimes get questions like, “I spent $100.00, on an ‘item’ and I sacrificed it in a ritual in my backyard. Now it is sitting in my backyard getting ruined by the rain and animals. How do I know if my offering was accepted because it is still where I left it?” This is an important point to understand, we do not sacrifice the "item" per se, it is the energy/megin in the “item” that one sacrifices. This is why we can see archeological finds all across Europe of broken swords, pottery, and wood carvings. The “items” were broken so the energy/megin could be released.

A sacrifice needs to be something that is given freely. The absence of the item must be felt because of the value to the giver. This can be as simple as your favorite food or drink, or something you made or consider valuable. The sacrifice is even more meaningful if your personal megin was put into the item sacrificed. This might be a painting or any other craft you made. Anything you spent your time and effort on, focused your attention on making, will have more energy/megin than anything you could purchase. The item does not need to be a work of art as long as it is something you created and is important to you. This being said, meaningful energy or megin can be put into something if you put your effort and time into to earning the money to purchase the item to be sacrificed. It is even more powerful if you purchase the supplies to then make the item.

Items with little or no energy should be avoided as a sacrifice because the less megin/energy an item has the less powerful the sacrifice will be. (e.g., If you have a plastic item made by a machine, it may not have any energy in it at all.)

A simple how - to about making a sacrifice, when you offer the item as your sacrifice you should break it or burn it if possible. These two simple acts release the energy/megin from the item and allow the gods access to that energy.
