Hex Craft is everyday magic done with what you have on hand.

·        Traditional German hex craft is more of a combination of folk magic and shamanism.

It is more tied to nature, the land/land wights/nature spirits, one’s ancestors, and your culture.

Magic of the everyday person.

  • Lore is a big part of the tradition.

  • Family lore is an important part of passing on this tradition.

  • Folktales and Fairytales

  • Ancestors worship and working with your ancestors.

  • It is localized to the area where you live.

  • Knowledge is usually passed down inside a family or local area.

  • Tied to nature.

  • Will look different from region to region and sometimes vastly different.

  • There is even a difference between Pennsylvania German Hex Craft and the Hex Craft of Germany. This is due to the Pennsylvania Germans started migrating to the U.S. in the 1600’s so Germany was a completely different place at that time. There has also been 100’s of years of evolution separate from Germany here in America.

·        Evolves (A living tradition.)

Folk Lore can be much more word of mouth than written down.

  • Pennsylvania German – some of the folk magic was not written down till the early 20th century and the healing arts and charms were not written down till the early 21st century.
